Help An Artist, Save The Art - UPDATE

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 8, 2008, 2:07 PM
[link]

A quick reminder for everyone: as a digital artist, it doesn't take much for problems to become catastrophic. A little bad luck with a hard drive and suddenly it's seven years worth of work down the drain.

That's what I'm staring down as we speak. Two the hard drive containing ALL of my art was damaged in the process of trying to back up the data, rendering it inaccessible and potentially damaging the actual files. The drive itself was physically damaged, meaning that the only recourse available to me has been to take it to a professional data recovery center. Because of the nature of the damage and the configuration of the drive - a pair of RAID-0 striped hard-drives acting as one larger drive - the drive has had to be shipped to a clean room where it will be dismantled and the data read directly from the drive's platters via forensic data recovery methods.

As it currently stands, it's going to cost me approximately $4000 to save my career and all of the art I've created over the last seven years, including all of my comic work and art for an upcoming gallery show.

In an effort to defray the costs of the repairs, I'm selling prints of almost all of my paintings via DeviantArt; there are a variety of sizes and media available, all of which are professionally printed, archival quality and suitable for framing. Framed editions are also available.

Visit [link] for prices, sizes and availability.

In addition, I'm taking commissions. Contact me directly for any inquiries.

Every little bit helps.

Help An Artist, Save The Art

I'm a digital artist. All of my work is done entirely in Photoshop and Painter, which means there are no originals. As you might imagine, this means that it doesn't take much for small problems to become catastrophic. A little bad luck with a hard drive and suddenly it's seven years worth of work down the drain.

That's what I'm staring down as we speak. Last week the hard drive containing ALL of my art was damaged in the process of trying to back up the data, rendering it inaccessible and potentially damaging the contents. The only recourse to me has been to take it to a professional data recovery center.

Today I just found out that the normal data recovery methods aren't working and the drive is going to have to be taken off-site to a clean-room where it'll be taken apart and the physical platters examined.

Because it's a RAID drive, this is going to cost more than previously estimated. The current estimate is well into the thousands of dollars. The final price will probably be more than that. Considering that this is the sum total of my career, including paintings for an upcoming gallery show, I really have no choice in this matter.

I'm selling prints of almost all of my work to help defray the costs. There are various sizes available, all of them professionally printed and suitable for framing.

Visit the Studio Underhill store for prices and sizes. In addition, I'm taking commissions; contact me at domalley@studiounderhill.com for more information. Prices based on size and complexity. Remember, every little bit helps.

Prints!

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 25, 2008, 9:25 PM
So, in the name of keeping my DeviantArt page clear and uploading new images for prints, I'm clearing out a some old artwork and uploading others for prints. If I delete an old favorite of yours, I'm sorry. If you e-mail me I might be able to work out something if you want a copy.

Otherwise, there will be new and awesome prints for sale, all of them perfect for framing. Come and check them out!

Cleaning Up

After having added the latest pic, I've since gone through and weeded out the crap and weaker submissions. My apologies if I ended up deleting one of your favorites; I have lots of other wonderful paintings and photos for you to transfer your affections to.

The Radical Nautical show continues at Gallery Lombardi in Austin, TX. I was surprised (happy as hell, but surprised) when my piece sold within literal minutes of the show opening, which leads me to think I wasn't charging NEARLY enough. In any case, it's an awesome show, and everyone in the area should go and check it out.

Radical! Nautical!

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 2, 2007, 11:49 AM
Today marks the opening of the Radical Nautical show at the Gallery Lombardi in Austin, Texas. There's going to be music, food, dancers, booze and, of course, artwork.

Specifically, mine.

Well, not all mine. But mine's obviously the most important.

In any event, it will be great fun, and being selected for a juried art show is a thrill.

If you're in Austin, be sure to come on by. And while you're at it, pick up a copy of this week's Austin Chronicle and turn to page 35. The rest of you, go here
